I visited Warrington in 1999ish and had such a good time. As a Canadian everyone welcomed me as "that American bloke". It's OK, I understand. I remember seeing a monument to an IRA bombing. Humans will be humans...

A great video. Listening to the voices of the workers is brilliant. My Great Grandfather was a labourer on the canal. He moved from Norfolk where he was a platelayer and I presume he did that work on the railways used during the construction of the canal. My grandfather was born in the workmens huts (2 New Huts) in Whitby, Ellesmere Port in 1892. An amazing enginnering acheivement.Thank you for uploading this video.

Great memories, thank you for posting. When I was in kid in the '70s and '80s they were just building the Golden Square, it's funny seeing the Barley Mow in a street rather than in the corner of a shopping centre. We used to go to the old baths and to the Wimpy when I was young and to the town centre pubs when I was a teenager. I remember the old ABC with the picture house and a bingo hall, before it became Mr Smiths. I left in 1991, I think, when I was 19. My parents still live in Sankey and I've driven through the town centre recently, at least the parts where you can still drive; it all looks very different!

Thank you lovely to see my town how it used to be

I grew up in Warrington in the 50s and 60s. This is the town centre I remember with fondness. I am not sure of the motivation behind the need to destroy it. Can you imagine the same sort of thing happening in, say, Skipton? No, I thought not.

I was born here, lived in Appleton till I was 21, and it's now 50 years on from then. Watched the Wire with my Dad, used the Mulberry Tree in Stockton Heath for donkey's years.

I remember the Packet House as a great pub back in the 70s...they used to feature a jazz quartet called Back Door back then. On to The Feathers and Bill Medland's Lion Hotel for some rock blues, and then on to The Carlton. Watch United on Saturday and The Mighty Wire on Sunday? A great weekend.

Thanks for the happy memories. The decline of the town is shocking, compared with how it used to look.

I always thought the Deltic prototype was scrapped, though I'm sure I've seen recent photos online of the train on a track, possibly being transported elsewhere. Was the Deltic inspired by the American Pacific trains (can't remember their names) as it bears a likeness to them?. It certainly has an American diesel look about it, I could just imagine John Voight hanging onto the front like in Runaway Train lol.
